How to Select the Correct Ball Mount

Updated 05/12/2014 | Published 05/09/2014

Question:

I need a 2inch draw for a 2inch or 2 1/2inch receiver that measures 10 1/4inch to 10 1/2inch from the center of the ball mount hole to the center of the pin hole that secures the drawbar to the receiver. 10,000 or more gvw preferred. Any ideas?

Selecting a ball mount for use with the trailer hitch on your vehicle requires that you choose one with the appropriate shank size (1-1/4-inch, 2-inch or 2-1/2-inch), the appropriate towing weight class to match your hitch receiver (for example Class III) and the right amount of rise or drop to maintain your trailer at a level position when it is hitched. The linked article will give you a good starting point.

For example, the ball mount you referenced, # 40331 from Draw-Tite, fits 2-inch receivers, requires a hitch ball with a 1-1/4-inch shank diameter that is at least 2-1/4-inches long, and is rated for a tongue weight of up to 2400-lbs. You can use the link provided to see all ball mounts, and by using the filters at the left-hand side of the page you can narrow the results to those products that suit your specific application.
