Why Start on Driver's Side Installing Tekonsha 4-Way on 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 06/22/2024

Question:

Shanes video installing Tekonsha 118727 for Grand Cherokee 4 pin trailer wiring kit starts with connecting trailer wires to left rear tail light, then routes wiring over to right rear tail light. Is there a reason why install begins with left rear light? That awkward route requires running battery wire from converter box near LR light, forward along left side frame, then over the engine to the battery terminal on R front fender. Flipping the wiring install to begin with RR tail light would position battery wire from converter box on same side as battery for easier and cleaner install if doable. Perhaps dedicated L/R wiring plug connectors are different pins, I dont know. Asking questions for clarity in advance of getting into install work.

Hey Robert,

Good question, and the reason you start on the driver's side of your 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee when installing the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118727 is because the wire that goes from the module to the taillight connector is longer for the passenger side connector. You couldn't switch them because of how they're pinned, like you mentioned.

Hey Robert, how did things go with the wiring harness on your Grand Cherokee once you followed the driver-side start? Knowing how the routing worked out could really help others planning the same install.
