Steps For Getting A Vehicle Ready To Flat Tow
Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 06/20/2024 >
Question:
1. Shift automatic transmission into N Neutral or depress clutch pedal on manual transmission. 2. Shift transfer case lever into desired position. 3. Shift automatic transmission into D Drive or release clutch on manual transmission. Note: When shifting out of transfer case N Neutral on automatic transmission equipped vehicles, turning the engine off may be required to avoid gear clash. Above is the shifting out of neutral instructions. I have couple of stupid questions: 1. When do start the vehicle? 2. What comes after step 3? Thanks

Hey Steve,
I'm gonna need to know the year/make/model of the vehicle you're trying to flat tow to determine the correct steps to get it ready to be towed.
