Is A Brake-Lite Relay Kit Needed For A 2024 Ford F-150 With Smart Diode Wiring

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 06/10/2024

Question:

I have a 2024 ford f150 with incandescent blubs that I will be using as a TOAD. If I use Roadmaster Smart Diodes for Variable Voltage Incandescent Tail Lights does that mean I will not need to install a Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles Item RM-88400?

Hey Lonnie,

Roadmaster actually put a tech note out about this very issue back in 2022. The Brake-Lite Relay Kit # RM-88400 isn't going to be compatible with your F-150 and you would instead just need to install the Roadmaster Smart Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Wiring Kit for Variable Voltage Incandescent Tail Lights # RM26FR following the wiring diagram below and the diodes will take care of the rest.

Hey Lonnie, how did things go with the Smart Diode wiring kit on your F-150? Did it handle the brake light function the way you needed without the relay kit? Your update could make it easier for others setting up similar toads.
