Question:
I have a 2007 Mastercraft boat trailer with dual axle hydraulic disc brakes. The tongue actuator is bad and is apparently a common problem. I’ve read that people convert these to electric brakes. Do you guys have a conversion kit for this that maintains the fold away tongue?

Hello Erik, it certainly is possible to convert your trailer from surge brakes over to electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) brakes. Basically, all you will need to add is an EOH disc brake actuator # HBA16 and a wiring kit # HS381-9000. The wiring kit contains everything you need to install and wire in the actuator, including a junction box for your connections. You will simply attach the brake line from your surge coupler to the Hydrastar actuator.
As long as the current surge actuator is still intact, you could simply disable the coupler and leave it in place. Or you can replace it with a standard ball coupler like the Demco Channel Tongue Coupler # DM13203-95 which will fit on a 3" channel and accepts a 2-5/16" trailer ball. really any standard coupler should allow you to retain the fold away tongue, although it depends how the current actuator is attached.
Keep in mind that your tow vehicle will need to be equipped with a brake controller that is compatible with OEH brakes. Most OEM controllers, and virtually every aftermarket controller such as the Tekonsha P3 # 90195 will be EOH compatible, but I do suggest that you verify this since it is a requirement.
