Recommendation For a Off-Road Trailer With Coupler Taller Than Hitch Behind a Jeep Wrangler

Updated 05/17/2024 | Published 05/16/2024

Question:

My Wranglers hitch is rated for 3500 lbs, but this new trailer I have 670 lbs with a 500 lb load capacity sits higher than my Jeeps hitch See pictures. In order to get it to sit level, Id have to clear my spare tire on the back by 14.5 inches and raise the receiver 8 inches. This obviously concerns me because Ive read about tongue weight and reduced weight ratings. I cant seem to find an alternative other than lifting my vehicle. I was considering a 7 inch extender with an additional 8 inch extender that also had an 8 in rise. What am I looking at with this? Thank you in advance

I do have a recommendation for you that will eliminate the need for any extensions and adapters. I would recommend welding on the 2" Receiver # E17 to the bottom of the trailers A-Frame. Then you will be able to use the Lock N Roll Articulating Coupler # 336TS520 in your Jeep's receiver and then use the Lock N Roll Articulating Hitch # 336VS503505 on the trailer side. This hitch offers up to a 4" drop and with the receiver mounted under the trailer frame it should give you a nice level connection.
