What Is The Purpose Of The Ball Bearing In A Propane Hose

Updated 04/15/2024 | Published 04/13/2024

Question:

When I removed the old hose, a small ball bearing came out and what appeared to be a small plastic screen. Is that a different kind of hose than this one, or some other adapter? Or an old style hose?

Hey Mark,

The ball bearing is used as a failsafe for the propane hose. If the flow is normal the ball will stay suspended. If the flow drops the ball will be forced against the opening in the fitting and shut off the gas. With yours falling out the hose is definitely in need of replacement. I'm not sure if the Camco Propane Supply Hose - ACME Nut x Male Inverted Flare # CAM59065 is what you're needing but if it's not then I'll just need to know the connection types you're trying to connect to and how long you'd like the hose to be in order to find the correct replacement for you.

How do I get that info? It looks like a standard regulator on a camper with two tanks.

@Mark So you just need some 'pigtails' to connect two propane tanks to a dual regulator then? If so, then the # CAM59065 with an 1/4" female inverted flare fitting is likely going to be the correct fit. You can measure the opening on the regulator inlets to confirm.

@KevinC Thanks, the little ball bearing is what was throwing me off. I have since seen the article about propane connectors by etrailer and am digesting it.
