Replacing Dometic AC Unit - Does It Make Sense To Replace Both The Inside And Outside Unit?

Published 03/14/2024

Question:

Hello, We have a living quarters horse trailer that needs a new AC unit. The brand is dometic. I have pictures of the current unit. Does it make sense to replace the inside and outside unit, or just the outside. Thanks, Frank

Hello Frank, we do offer AC units that will replace your current Dometic unit. In most cases it makes sense to replace only the rooftop portion and leave everything inside the camper as-is. That said, I am not sure how old your current unit is, but a new upgraded distribution box might be a good idea. They are not terribly expensive, and it will be easy to add on since you will be disconnecting and removing the rooftop portion anyways.

Your best option will be an Advent AC unit. Since this is for your living quarters only, you can probably get away with a 13.5K BTU unit although they are available in 15,00 BTU as well. I suggest the following:

Advent Air RV Air Conditioner - 13,500 Btu - White # ACDOM135

This unit comes with a start capacitor and is a direct replacement for your Dometic unit. If you do wish to replace the thermostat and distribution box you can use part # ACDB which is a manually controlled distribution box with adjustable registers. Like I said, you are not required to replace the distribution box, but I believe it makes sense to replace it while you are at it.

I have linked our video reviews for the Advent AC and Distribution Box below if you want to take a look.
