Can a Triple Axle Trailer Be Converted To Tandem Axle and Upgraded To 8,000LB Axles?
Published 02/23/2024 >
Question:
I have a triple axle deck over equipment trailer and want to convert it to dual axle. I plan on upgrading the current 5,200 pound axles to 8,000 pound axles. What axle position do I eliminate? For example can I remove the rear most axle and install two 8,000 pound axles in the two forward position current spots without needing to completely reposition both new axles and weld new spring hangers on? FYI in the picture the forward axle has already been removed.

It is really going to come down to the loads you are hauling but in most cases you would be better off using the front 2 axle positions. Do understand your hangers will still likely need adjusted since the distance between the center hangers is typically different than the front and rear hangers. This is caused by the leaf springs mounting to the front and rear hangers rather than to the equalizers like you have on the center hangers. Also you should reach out to the trailer manufacturer as you may also need to upgrade the hangers. Most double eye spring hanger kits are only rated for up to 7,000lb trailer axles.
If you can let me know more details about what you have on your trailer Kevin, I can help you further determine what components will need to be upgraded with the axle swap.
