I just bought a 2023 grand Cherokee and the factory crossbars are 5 1/2 to 6 inches off the roof. Are there any options that are an inch or two lower

Yes there is, Howie. I recommend checking out the Thule WingBar Edge Crossbars # TH96FE with the feet # TH89SC and the fit kit # TH68FE.
These crossbars are only going to stick up 3 1/2" above the factory rails, and is going to be the lowest profile bars for your Grand Cherokee.
Also, these bars measure 34" long, have an integrated t-slot for roof mounted accessories, and a dynamic weight capacity of 165 lbs.
