Question:
Im converting an Interstate 5x8 cargo trailer to an off-road camper, it has a 3500lb Dexter axle on it right now. I want to change the tires/wheels to match my truck so I would need a 6x5.5 bolt pattern on the axle. Couple of questions on this - the wheel Im looking at Pro Comp 51 uses a 4.25 backspace - would this work with a typical Dexter axle? And secondly - Im not seeing an axle for 6x5.5 thats small enough for my trailer size - would a torsion system make more sense? And lastly - are there advantages to a torsion axle vs. leaf springs? Ive heard both that torsion provides a better ride and that leaf springs are superior. Thanks for any and all help! Love your site btw.

I did a little research and was able to figure out that your Pro Comp 51 tires will have a -6 offset which means you will not have any issues if you were to use a standard axle. With that said we actually don't have any 3.5K axles that have a 6 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern so you'd want to use an axle-less system like the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR3500S05 with the hub # 84656UC3.
As far as torsion vs springs axles go, It'd depend on your budget. Torsion axles are generally more expensive and require almost no maintenance whereas spring axles are more durable and cost effective but will require much more maintenance.
