Is there anything special about these that makes them compatible with the GearLocker?

Not necessarily. The GearTotes for Yakima EXO GearLocker # Y64VR measure 13" long x 17-1/2" wide x 9" tall and can carry up to 50 lbs of cargo so if you have some totes that meet these specs they will work just fine as well. Yakima just wanted to offer an easy and known solution for organizing cargo in the GearLocker # Y62VR.
