Troubleshooting A Kwikee 39 Series Electric Steps that Keeps Blowing Fuses

Updated 09/25/2023 | Published 09/23/2023

Question:

Hello, I have an issue with blowing fuses on my Kwikee RV steps only when I turn the porch light on. There is a light on the steps, and the porch light which goes through the control unit mounted to the underside of the steps. I suspect there is an internal short in the control box. Do I have no choice but to replace the entire unit including the motor as suggested on your website for this particular model? All else functions normally with my steps, they retract and extend as they always have. My RV is a 2004 Fleetwood Southwind. See the attached picture for the model of the controller. Please advise. Thanks.

Blowing a fuse is a key indicator that there is faulty wiring, so that's going to be what you need to check. You're going to need to go through your wiring and make sure there aren't wires touching, broken, or pinched.

If you've checked your wiring and found no breaks or damaged wires, then the last thing I'd recommend you check is the motor. A bad motor would also cause your fuses to blow if it's not getting the proper voltage. You'll want to make sure that your motor is getting 12V, and if it does not then you're going to need the Motor Upgrade Kit for Kwikee 28, 31, 37, and 39 Series Electric RV Steps # LC379769.

This kit includes a new motor, gearbox, control unit, and installation hardware.
