Question:
I am intending to install a front mount receiver hitch to my 2004Ford Ranger 4X4 XLT. I tow a pop up style camper and could use the cargo carrier at the front of the vehicle fo a portable generator or storage containers. Is this a viable option for me. Folded up would it interfere with lights and is there a clearance issue while down? Your input is greatly appreciated.

You could install a front mount hitch on your 2004 Ford Ranger and use it to carry cargo but there are some things to consider. First is capacity. Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver # C31063 is rated for 350 pounds vertical load (like tongue weight). But the front axle capacity may not allow for that much weight so you need to check the truck owners manual or the sticker in the door jamb with the weight capacities on it.
The carrier could block the lights and also reduce driver visibility and can restrict airflow to the motor. To determine if the lights will be blocked you can measure from the center of the front of your truck 30 inches to each side. The carrier, # C18151, is 60 inches across so measuring 30 inches from center to the right and left will indicate how far the carrier will be.
Anything placed at the front of the vehicle will reduce airflow. Considering that you will be towing a trailer also I recommend adding a transmission cooler. I have linked the cooler main page for your truck. There are different recommendations and fitting requirements depending on the motor you have.
If the motor runs hot then you may want to look into adding an electric fan for additional cooling. I have included a link to the electric fan options. If you wanted to add one you will need to determine the space you have available first and then choose one that will fit in the available space.
