I checked with Thule on this and It seems the Thule OutWay Platform Trunk Bike Rack # TH65JV would not be a good fit for your 2014 Volkswagen Passat. I can definitely see the appeal of that bike rack since it is one of the only trunk mount platform style racks on the market. I have a few potential solutions for you.

First, if you want a good trunk mount bike rack, I recommend the Thule Gateway pro 2 # TH88VR. This can hold 2 bikes weighing up to 35 lbs apiece. Adjustable arms allow this to fit virtually any vehicle, and a built in cable lock allows you to lock your bikes to the rack. Please note that an adapter bar like part # TH982XT may be needed for any children's bikes or "alternative frame" bikes.

If a platform rack is your preference, we would have to do a hitch mounted bike rack. First I would recommend installing a trailer hitch like the EcoHitch # 306-X7317. This will give you a 2" receiver on the back, and will allow you to carry up to 300 lbs tongue weight. This will open the door to a lot more options for a platform rack.

If you want a great all around bike rack I recommend the Kuat NV 2.0 # BA22B. I have used this rack personally for about 2 years now and I have been very happy with it. It can hold much heavier bikes weighing up to 60 lbs apiece. It has a knob that allows you to hand-tighten the rack to the hitch, so it is very secure and you will experience very little movement at the hitch. Then we have my favorite feature about this rack- It looks Cool!
