Can Trailer Side 4-Way be Replaced With 4-Way With Solid Color Wires
Updated 06/28/2023 | Published 06/27/2023 >
Question:
I need to trouble shoot wiring harness. The damaged plug on the trailer harness was removed which has left a yellow wire and 2 other wires that are yellow with green and yellow with brown and ground white. Trying to locate just a plug with same color code is near impossible and do not want to rewire whole trailer. Can a solid color 4 pin be used and would pattern as far as color code be same for hooking up?

You won't have to re-wire your trailer, and you can replace your trailer end 4-way with one that has solid and/or different colors than your current one. You can't match color for color though, as that's just not a possibility. You will have to test the trailer wires for function using a charged 12 volt battery and a jumper cable, applying 12 volts to each wire, which is going to tell you what their functions are; that will allow you to hook up your new connector.
For a new 4-way use the Hopkins Endurance 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector # HM48110
On this connector, yellow is left turn and brake, green is right turn and brake, brown is tail, and white is ground. To connect the wires use butt connectors # DW05744-10.
