Can a Trailer be Backed Up when Using a Weight Distribution System

Question:

Hello Im looking to purchase a dump trailer soon and was looking into a weight distribution system but read somewhere that you have to disconnect it in order to go in reverse. Is this true or did I miss read something . Thanks for advise.

If you are backing up in a relatively straight line then you will not have to disengage the spring bars of a weight distribution system. But if you will be making maneuvers and turning while backing up then you will need to disengage the spring bars or it could damage them or the trailer.

Removing the spring bars is not all that difficult or time consuming and the benefits of having a weight distribution system out weigh the couple of minutes it takes to remove and later reinstall the bars.

To choose a weight distribution system, you need to go by the total tongue weight of the trailer. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow and adding to that the weight of any cargo loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
