Trouble Shooting New Dexter Brakes Only Being Broken In on One Side
Updated 05/31/2023 | Published 05/28/2023 >
Question:
I did order the dexter brake assemblies and installed today. I did the “burnish” process to adjust the new brakes. Manually activating electric brake until isthmus stops the trailer and tow vehicle from 20mph. With driving in between to cool the brakes. Should take 20-30 reps. I got this procedure from an etrailer rep a few years ago when I replaced brakes on previous camper. This time the burnish process really couldn’t bring the camper/vehicle to a stop. I felt some braking effect but way less than I did when I did this process in the previous camper. I raised left tire and had friend activate brake controller. Immediate solid stop of wheel I had put in motion. Some slight hum. On the right there was a rather loud buzz and the wheel came to a gradual stop. Not the crisp hard stop the left side did How should I proceed? What should I check to see why braking is weak on one side?

It sounds like there's an issue with the wiring on the right hand side of your trailer. The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit item # 23-468-469 should be equal adjusted at this point. I recommend checking all the wires and especially the connection to the brakes on that side.
