Availability of High Capacity Hitch for 2013 Flex hitch

Updated 02/07/2014 | Published 02/06/2014

Question:

I am trying to find a 5000 lb rated hitch for my 2013 Flex with dual exhaust. Does anyone make one or is 4000 lb hitch the only option. I am considering purchasing a hybrid travel trailer that weighs about 4300 lb.

According to my research, the maximum towing capacity of the 2013 Ford Flex is 4500 lbs.

The maximum capacity trailer hitch any of our vendors offer for the 2013 Flex with the dual exhaust is 4000 lbs, as you mentioned. The # 13551 hitch you mentioned is unfortunately only a fit for single exhaust Flex models, as the muffler on the passenger side would interfere with the hitch installation.

The 4,300lb trailer weight you mentioned is likely a dry weight, which would not include any gear, and with empty propane and water tanks. The trailer is without a doubt too heavy for any of the hitches offered for it (both what we offer and what I found online). When loaded with gear and the water and propane tanks are full, you will likely also exceed the 4500 lb towing capacity of the vehicle.

Even if you were able to locate a hitch with a slightly higher towing capacity, you will still be right at or over the towing capacity of the vehicle, which would be very hard on your transmission and engine. Long story short, I would recommend either a lighter trailer or a tow vehicle with a higher towing capacity. I wish I had better news for you.
