Question:
I need to wire my 2017 Ford Edge SEL as a towed vehicle behind my RV tail/stop/turn lights, and I also need to install a trailer hitch on the rear of the Edge, and wire a lighting connector for that hitch. Do I need both the toad and separate trailer plug-in harnesses? If I do, what order to they plug in trailer lights first, then toad, or opposite? In the pre-LED world I could feed the toad wiring into the 4-prong trailer wiring jack on the Edge. Based on all the isolation built into the plug-in adapters, it doesnt sound like that would work on todays cars. Thanks

You are correct. Now that you have LED's you will need two separate wiring harnesses for flat towing and trailer lights. Unless you want to run removable magnet lights like Item # RM-2120 from your RV over your Edge SEL you are going to want the Roadmaster Smart Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Wiring Kit item # RM38FR. This kit is the only one available for the 2017 Edge SEL and it includes everything you need to control your vehicles lights from your RV.
The best hitch for your Edge is going to be the etrailer Hitch item # e36RR. This hitch is custom fit and bolts to your Ford with included hardware.
I really like this hitch because of its matte black powder coated finish. Not only does it do a better job of protecting against rust but it also blends in better beneath your vehicle compared to other shinny glossy hitches.
For a wiring harness you will want the Curt item # C56272. This harness is designed specifically for the SEL model and plugs directly into your Edge's factory wiring behind the rear tail lights.
To round out your towing setup I recommend the Curt Towing Starter Kit for 2" Hitches item # C45534. This towing kit will provide you with a 2" ball and a fixed ball mount with a 3/4" rise and 2" drop. It also includes a hitch pin and clip, hitch receiver lock with keys, hitch cover, and a storage case.
