Question:
I bought a Curt weight distribution hitch 17052 that is 8,000-10,000 lb rated. My truck towing capacity is only 6500 and trailer is only 5,400 gvwr Is there a disadvantage to using this larger weight distribution hitch?

The important thing to remember with the Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17052 is while it is rated for a trailer up to 10,000lbs you need to stay within the tongue weight rating which is 800-1,000lbs for this hitch. If the tongue weight on your trailer falls in this window then there is no disadvantage to using this weight distribution on your trailer. For weight distribution if the bars are rated for more tongue weight than what you have you do risk transferring more weight onto the front of your vehicle which may cause the rear end to not get proper traction.
If you are unsure of your tongue weight we do have a Scale # e99044 you can use to verify. You can always look at replacing your bars with a set of the 400-600LB Bars # C17071 or the 600-800LB Bars # C17072. These bars are sold individually so be sure to get 2 bars to match the tongue weight you need.
