Am I correct that the winch will stop if I stop turning the handle and the cable will be stopped so the load will be left hanging and not tumble to the floor ?

Yes, you are correct that for the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL11011, once you stop turning the handle the load on the winch will be stopped due to the worm gear function of this hand winch.

For this particular, and most worm gear winches, there is not a free spool mode. To extend the the line you would turn the handle one direction, and then to retract the line you would turn the handle the opposite direction. This is due to the interaction between the handle driven worm gear, and the traditional gear on the drum spool of the winch. While the worm gear turns, the drum gear rotates accordingly.

Also due to the worm gear function of this winch there is not a minimum load that is necessary for operation, and as you mentioned when the handle is at rest then, then load is at rest and there is not an additional braking system needed. This winch is rated for yup to 1,500 pounds, and has a gear ratio of 30 to 1.

Please note that this winch is not to be used as a hoist for lifting, supporting or transporting people, or for loads over areas where people can be present.
