Is Plastic Lock Knob on Thule Force XT XL Flimsy
Updated 02/07/2023 | Published 02/06/2023 >
Question:
I am comparing the Thule Force XT XL with the new Yakima NX 18 cargo box. I generally favor the mounting hardware for the Yakima same as the Grandtour, having a single tool that makes the floor surface flatter for cargo. However, how does that actually work in practice if the tool is required on the opposite side of the box? Does one need to take the tool, close and lock the lid, open the other side, use the tool, close and lock that side, and reopen the first side to stow the tool? Maybe the mounting hardware is better on the Force after all? Second, the plastic lock knob on the Force seems flimsy, maybe even worse than the many lower end cargo box locks having no knob or handle. Without a knob or handle, are keys more likely to break in the lock? Please share your expert thoughts.

Let's start with the locks, and the locking mechanism isn't flimsy, and keys are definitely not more likely to break in the Thule Force XT XL Rooftop Cargo Box # TH6358B.
As for the Yakima box, the mounting procedure will essentially be the same as with the Force XT XL # TH6358B (with the exception of the Force not using the tool to tighten the clamps). Assuming you have some height with the use of something like a step stool # TE97FR, you won't have to go to both sides to tighten the mounting hardware, you'll be able to do it from a single side.
