Can the hitch ne removed to haul items in my truck bed? Can we keep a toneau cover on our bed when not towing?

Yes, the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Slider # C16521 can be removed from the truck bed for hauling items, however the base rails would still be in place. The # C16521 weighs approximately 200 lbs. total. But the head can be removed allowing you to remove the hitch in 2 pieces, lightening the load.
You will likely be able to keep your tonneau cover on with the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Slider # C16521 installed. The Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Slider # C16521 has 4" of height adjustment. If you are at the top level of the height adjustment the cover may hit the hitch. But if you are on the lower settings, the cover should clear the hitch.
