Could a 2008 Nissan Xterra Flat Tow a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Updated 11/20/2013 | Published 11/19/2013

Question:

For example I will be traveling across country with a new destination every 3 months... for the next 2 years. I own two cars that I need to take with me. The vehicle I will be driving is a 2008 Nissan xterra that has a 5,000lbs tow capacity. I will be towing a 2005 Jeep wrangle unlimited that weighs 3,750lbs. My question is will a tow bar work with this application? A car towing another car And is this legal? Thanks

Flat towing is legal and using a tow bar like the Demco Commander # DM9511012 would be an excellent way to do that. You will need several other components to complete the flat-towing setup beyond just a tow bar.

You will need a base plate kit for the 2005 Jeep Wrangler, this will provide the attachment point for the tow bar. For that I recommend the Demco # DM9519045 that pairs up with the Commander tow bar.

Next is lighting, for that I would recommend the Hopkins # HM56202. It plugs inline with the taillights of your Jeep and will allow you to control the lighting functions of the Wrangler.

For supplemental braking I recommend the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR. This is a proportional brake unit that will apply your Wrangler brakes in proportion with the Xterras braking.

Lastly, you will want to check the owners manual of the Wrangler to determine if there are any stipulations for the vehicle while being flat-towed.

I attached a couple FAQ articles on flat towing that you might find informative as well.
