To override the brakes in an emergency , would I just press and hold the dial button ???

Yes, you are absolutely correct; in order to activate the manual override, all you have to do is press in the control knob dial of the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR.
This will immediately apply the brakes on your trailer.
