Recommendations for Carrying a Pride Mobility Scooter with a Buick Century

Question:

Most mobility lifts/trailers need a class iii hitch...our car Buick Century can only have a class ii hitch. Are there any mobility carriers out there that can be used with a class ii hitch? I have a pride mobility scooter...its kind of big...heavy...maybe 200 lbs.

I have a solution that will allow you to carry your Pride mobility scooter with your Buick Century, however, due to the weight limitations of your Buick Century, I would not recommend using a hitch mounted carrier to transport your scooter.

The important factor to consider when using a hitch mounted carrier is the tongue weight capacity of the vehicle. Buick does not list a specific tongue weight capacity for the Century, but they do list a towing capacity of 1,000 lbs. The tongue weight of a vehicle is typically 10 percent of the towing capacity, which would put your tongue weight capacity at 100 lbs.

Instead of a hitch mounted carrier, I recommend using a small trailer. Towing your scooter will put less stress on the vehicle frame and suspension and would be the safest option. In addition to a trailer hitch, you will also need a trailer wiring harness to tow a trailer. For this I recommend the 4-Pole Hardwire Kit, # 18252. If you also need a trailer hitch, could you tell me the year of your Century? I would be happy to recommend the correct hitch, ball mount and hitch ball for you.
