GM did not start equipping their trucks with the plug-in connector until the 1999 model year Silverado/Sierra.

In some of the mid to late 1990s models, GM provided what could best be called a rudimentary tow package, with a blue and a red or an orange wire ran from below the master cylinder, under the cab and along the drivers side frame rail to terminate on the frame rail behind the rear wheel. Because of the age of the vehicle, the ends of the wires are usually pretty hard to find, with lots of road grime and crud built up on the underside of the vehicle.

Even if these wires are present, the install would require hard wiring the controller into place. We offer a Brake Controller Installation Kit, part # ETBC7 that would work very well for you. The kit contains everything needed to install a controller, including an adapter to convert a 4-pole trailer connector to a 7-way. If your Tahoe does not already have a 4-pole, you can easily add one using # C55319.

If you have not already chosen a brake controller, you cannot go wrong with the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The P2 is very highly rated by our customers because it is extremely reliable and easy to use.
