Question:
I purchased the yellow sumo about a year ago to reduce sag on my 2014 frontier while towing a ~4500lb camper. I have weight distribution system. The ride without load was so unbearable, I had to remove them within 3 weeks. My question is would the black 1500lb significantly improve the ride without load over the yellow ones or should I really just look at the airbag system?

Ultimately air bags are best when it comes to adjusting for different loads for your Nissan Frontier since they actually have the ability to be adjusted, but they are more expensive and require maintenance which is why the SumoSprings are so popular. If you'd rather go with air then you need the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2558. You might also be interested in the Firestone Air Command I Light Duty Compressor Kit # F2158 so you're able to monitor and adjust your air bags on the fly.
Ideally your weight distribution system (WDS) should be rated so that you don't really need suspension enhancement so if the loaded tongue weight of your trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your Frontier falls in the middle of the tongue weight range for your WDS you might try towing a few times prior to adding suspension enhancement to see if you're good without it.
