what is most common diameter ball used to tow an enclosed trailer 5and8 thru 6and12 foot. have not located a trailer yet. thank you

The most common ball size is probably a 2 inch. But the 3 most common sizes are 1-7/8, 2, and 2-5/16 inch. But there is more to it than that because ball mounts require balls that have a specific diameter shank, the threaded part.
To determine the ball size you will need just look at the trailers coupler, once you find one. It will say the size ball you need. Some couplers can fit on all 3 sizes.
To determine the shank diameter you would need to measure the ball hole opening on the ball mount you are using. Once you know all of this information you can select the appropriate ball size and capacity. I have included a link to the ball main page for you.
