It looks like the 45 lb weight rating that you're seeing is only for the OEM crossbars that came with your 2017 Ford Escape. For your application I recommend going with the Inno roof rack because it has a higher weight capacity at 140 lbs, an easy-to-use T-Slot system for mounting accessories, and the legs come with locks so you can deter theft of your roof rack system:

I'm attaching an installation video of this setup on a 2017 Toyota RAV4 for you to check out. It's a different vehicle but the installation is exactly the same for your 2017 Escape.
