Troubleshooting Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator

Question:

I am running this brake actuator on my tandem dual 12k axle trailer. It randomly blew the 40 amp power wire black fuse. I replaced the fuse and went to check out the wiring at the trailer junction box and found that the black wire was getting extremely hot to the point of melting the insulation. I immediately cut the wire to prevent damage and I inspected it further. I did a continuity test between the black wire on the actuator to ground and it showed to be connected. I dont think it should be connected and is leading me to think that the internal motor in the actuator has a short circuit. Can you help me with this?

The black wire on the Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator, # K71-650 is the positive line from the tow vehicle so yes it should be showing current, 12 VDC/40amp. Verify current and condition of fuse if the wire is getting hot enough to melt the insulation you may have a short. This should 12 gauge wire or better.
