Published 11/10/2021

Question:

can I apply new roof sealant over the original? If not how do I remove the old. It is real hard to get up. Do not want to poke hole in rubber roof.

If the old sealant only has minor cracks you can use a sealant like the LaSalle Bristol XTRM Universal Self-Leveling Sealant # 34427034145-1 which is a little easier to work with than the Alpha Systems 1021 Self-Leveling Sealant for RVs # AL98KV. You need to keep in mind that adding sealant over sealant is just a quick fix and most likely temporary. You are better off getting the old sealant off and then applying the new sealant.

Getting the old sealant off isn't incredibly difficult, just very time consuming. We do have the Performance Tool Pry Tool Set # PT73HJ which will help make the task a little easier for you. You can use the tool by slowly getting the tool under the sealant and start to get that section up. When you start working the sealant up you are not going to want to just pull the sealant, you will want to continue working under the sealant with the tool the entire way. That is what makes this time consuming, if you just start to pull on the sealant it will start to pull up the membrane and then it won't be flat again. I have included a video, at about the 7:00 mark you can see them working the old sealant off.
