Weight Distribution Shank for 2-1/2 inch Hitch with A Lot of Drop

Question:

Can you help me find a product? 2.5 shank, sway control hitch with big drop ... 10-12 preferred. Lifted truck. Ultralite Camper Trailer has ~900lbs tongue weight, 5000lbs total weight.

The weight distribution shank we offer for the 2-1/2 inch hitch size that has the most drop is the Equal-i-zer part # EQ34FR which can do a drop of up to 12 inches.

What happens when your tongue weight is only 850 pounds but the hitch is rated at 1600 and up?

The shank will not be affected with any tongue weights under 1600 pounds.

That hitch is listed at starting tongue weights at 1600lbs. This is 850. What would happen if we used it at half the recommended tongue weight? Would it offer too much resistance and ride poorly?

For your trailer weighing 5000 pounds, and with a tongue weight between 700 and 1000 pounds, and for use with a 2-1/2 inch receiver, and a 12" drop shank, I recommend the Equalizer # EQ34FR shank that you already referred to, and the Equalizer # EQ37101ET weight distribution and sway control hitch that omits the shank since you are getting a special one already. The shank will not be affected with any tongue weights under 1000 pounds. The hitch itself is properly sized for your load.
