Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2009 Infinity EX35 2009

Updated 06/04/2013 | Published 05/29/2013

Question:

I want to put a 2 inch hitch on the back of my 2009 EX35 Infiniti to hopefully hold a bike rack for 3 bikes. However, another trailer rental company indicates that they do not have a hitch for this year car only 2008, 2010, 2011. Can you tell me what bike rack hitch will work for this car? Can I attach a bike rack that will hold 3 bikes or am I limited to 2 bikes? Many thanks for your help.

For your 2009 Infinity EX35 we have 1 trailer hitch that is considered a fit for that vehicle, the Curt Trailer Hitch # C11510.

This trailer hitch is a Class I hitch and has a maximum capacity of 1,500 pounds and a maximum tongue weight capacity of 150 pounds. This hitch has a receiver opening of 1-1/4 by 1-1/4 inches. There is not a 2 inch hitch that is considered a fit for your vehicle.

Please note that the warranty requirements of the Curt Hitch stipulate that all non-trailer loads be supported by an auxiliary stabilizing strap. This strap is available as part # 18050. For your specific vehicle the strap can be attached to the bottom of the hatch.

With a Class I hitch, the bike rack and hitch manufacturers all agree that it is not recommended to use a hitch mounted bike rack that will carry more than 2 bikes. Adding the third bike at the appropriate carrying position adds leverage on the hitch. This additional leverage and the weight associated with carrying 3 bikes results in too much stress on the hitch. The additional stress can result in damage to your vehicle and the hitch, possibly resulting in damage or the possible loss of cargo carried on the hitch accessory..

Therefore, if you decide to go with a hitch mounted rack, you will be limited to a 2 bike carrying capacity. If you would like a 2 bike carrier hitch mounted bike rack I would recommend the Swagman Trailhead # S63360.

If you plan to be carrying alternative frame, womens, or childrens bikes that do not have a traditional horizontal cross bar an adapter bar is recommended for carrying these bikes. This adapter bar mounts the bikes in an optimal position therefore providing for additional ground clearance. I would recommend the Swagman Easy-Out Adapter bar # 64005.

The best option for carrying 3 bikes would be a roof mounted system. Please check your owners manual or manufacturer to ensure that your vehicle is capable of having a roof mounted cargo system and the weight limitations or capacities of your roof.

For your 2009 Infinity EX35 that has factory installed rails that run front to back I suggest the Thule SquareBAr Roof Rack. This Thule roof rack system is composed of 47 inch crossbars, part # TH712200, and the Evo raised rail feet, part # TH710401, which attaches to your vehicle's existing rail system.

For a bike carrier that mounts to the Thule crossbars mentioned above there are several options for how the bike mounts to the rack, like fork mount, frame mount, or wheel mount. My recommendation would be to use a wheel mount style, and specifically the Thule UpRide # TH599000.

Please check the weight capacity of your vehicle and make sure that you are not exceeding your roof cargo limitations by carrying 3 bikes. For your information the # TH599000 bike carrier itself weighs less than 15 pounds unloaded.
