Can I Change to Smaller Trailer Tires to Reduce Overall Trailer Height?

Updated 09/20/2021 | Published 09/18/2021

Question:

We just picked up a new boat but we are approx 1inch short on the clearance of our garage door. I was thinking of possibly going to low profile tires to make up the difference. Would that work and white option would you have? The trailer is a tandem trailer made by mastercraft for a 2020 x22 boat. current tires are st225/75R/15 I would love to make up at least 2inch if possible with a change of tires. Can I do this?

If you are needing a little more clearance, going with a smaller tire and or wheel will definitely be ok. The standard 225/75R15 tire will have an outer diameter of 28.31 inches, so something like the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM32397 with its 27.3 inch outer diameter may not get you quite there.

The best option for you will be to go with a 14 inch option. The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM32156 will have an outer diameter of 26.3 inches, which will definitely get you the inch of clearance needed. However, with this having a Load Range C, it is rated to 1,925 pounds at 60 psi so you will need to make sure this will still work for your weight capacity. If it does, this will be the way I would go.
