Question:
I am considering replacing the brakes on an old trailer I was given I believe the 4inch axle is an old rear truck axle and is pretty heavy duty. The old brakes have cables like parking brakes and the cables were cut short years ago making them not functional. I have attached a photo of the hubs. Any idea what kind they are? Id like to try and find a diagram and specs to see if replacing the brakes might be worth the effort. I would also like to put the appropriate springs on for the axle specs. Can you tell me the dimensions - hole diameter and spacingsa drawing would be nice - for the 4-bolt mounting holes on the AKEBRK-8? Also, what is the diameter of the axle shaft opening? I am rebuilding an old trailer with a 4inch axle assume its 9000#? with no identifying marks. Spindles, bearings, and hubs/drums appear to be in great shape and new electric brakes and springs would clean the trailer up nice. Thanks.

The measurements for the mounting holes on the # AKEBRK-8 are 3-5/8" across left to right on center and 3-7/16" top to bottom on center. The diameter of the pilot hole is 3-3/4", and the overall dimensions are 12-1/4" diameter x 3-3/8" wide. The axle rating for these trailer brakes is 8,000 lbs.
When picking out the correct brake assemblies for your trailer you want to measure the inner diameter of your hub/drums and the depth of the drums. This information will allow you to find the dimensions for the correct brake assembly like the 12-1/4" diameter x 3-3/8" wide on the # AEKBRK-8. In addition to this, you want to make sure the brake assembly has the same rating as your axle.
Assuming your axle is 9,000 lbs, you would need something like the # 23-450-451 Dexter Electric Brake Kit instead. All of our available brake kits for this axle capacity have a 5 or 7-bolt mounting flange pattern.
To find replacement springs you will also want to take measurements. We have one option for 9,000 lbs axles which is the # DX83QR 6-Leaf Slipper Spring for 9,000-lb Trailer Axles. The length of this spring from center eye to the end of the spring is 30". You will want to measure your existing spring the same way, from center eye to the end of the slipper, to find out if this spring fits. I have included a picture showing exactly where to measure.
I have attached a link which will take you to our available brake kits for 9,000 lbs axles as well as a helpful article on slipper spring trailer suspension systems for your reference.
