The brake on the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15761 is automatic. It has both a friction brake as well as a mechanical brake. When winding in the winch cable in you will hear a sharp clicking noise of the winch locking into position. To release cable with a load you will simply wind the handle in reverse. The handle will overcome the friction braking force and release the mechanical brake to allow you to release cable from the drum slowly. When you stop turning the winch handle the friction brake will hold the load in place and engage the mechanical brake. A minimum of 175lbs is required otherwise the handle will likely unscrew from the mount as there is not enough weight to counteract the brake mechanism.

If you have no weight on the cable you will want to use the freewheel lever to release the cable. You will simply turn the handle to let out cable until the freewheel lever can be engaged behind the handle hub. This will disengage both the friction brake as well as the mechanical brake.
