Why Isn't Patriot Hitches PH54FR Drop Hitch Adapter Rated for Flat Towing

Question:

Specs say the Patriot 11inch adjustable rise/ receiver, part# PH54FR, is rated for 700 tongue and 7000 gross weight, but it IS NOT recommended for flat towing. Specs for the Blue-Ox fixed 10inch rise/ receiver, part# BX88132, is rated for 400 tongue? and 5000 gross weight and IS recommended for flat towing. Can you tell me Whyinch the Patriot is NOT recommended for flat towing?

Expert Reply:

The reason is pretty simple. The Blue Ox # BX88132 is specifically designed for flat towing and has been rigorously tested for that purpose. The Patriot Hitch # PH54FR adjustable drop receiver adapter has NOT been tested for flat towing a vehicle, therefore Patriot Hitch can't recommend using the product for that purpose as they don't know how their product would preform in that application.

I've liked to product videos for both items mentioned above.

Is the Patriot 11inch adjustable rise/ receiver, part# PH54FR, still not rated for flat towing in July 2024? (I don't see a date on the question and answer above, and I'm wondering if (hoping) the situation has changed. The specs on the Patriot don't say anything about flat towing. Looking for something to use to flat tow a Chevy Equinox with a Bay Star 3014.

@Lyndon Unfortunately, that has not changed. Why not use the Blue Ox # BX88132? As long as your tow bar is within 3 inches +/- of level, you'll be good, it doesn't need to be exact.
