How Charge Trailer Battery With Truck While Using Winch

The 12v power pin on the 7-way connector of your 2012 Chevrolet Silverado will provide a small maintenance charge to your trailers battery, but will not be able to support it using a winch.

The only option to keep it charged when using something that draws a lot of power like a winch would be installing a heavy duty single pole connector # PK11851 on the truck and the trailer side # PK11852 on the trailer. These connectors will work with 00 gauge wire and you will need to run that wire from the trailer side connector to the battery on the trailer, and then from the truck side connector to the engine compartment of your Silverado.

Once you have the wire in the engine compartment you will need to mount a battery isolator # PK5231201. You will connect the wire you ran from the single pole to the AUX post. To the center post you will need to run some # 12-1-1 to a switched 12v power source that only gets power when your truck is turned on. Lastly you will run wire from the BATT post to a 40 amp circuit breaker # PK54540, and then to the positive terminal of your trucks battery.

What this will do is allow your truck to charge the trailer battery, but when your truck is turned off it will not pull any power so you will not need to worry about draining your truck battery. You will only want to plug in the single pole connector when you are planning on using the trailer battery for the winch.
