With the forward connector s removed when not being towed it would appear the open tubes would take in water during a storm which would lead to rust from inside. Is this the case?

The Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms Item # 1528-3 tubes can be capped when the forward connectors are removed with the RoadMaster Black Receiver Inserts for MX and XL Brackets Item # RM-200-5 to prevent any water from getting in and causing corrosion.
