Question:

Which breakaway kits work best with a tri axle?

If all 3 of the trailer axles have brakes you will need one with enough amperage to be able to apply the trailer brakes on full for at least 15 minutes. The Tekonsha system, # 50-85-313 will work with 1 to 3 axles. I have included a link to a video review for you. Another option is # 2028. I have also included a link to an FAQ article on installing a breakaway kit.

Can you explain why the item numbers you mentioned above are both 5ah batteries but only one works for 4 axle trailers? It's my understanding that a 5ah battery will operate only 2 axle brakes for 15 minutes, which tells me that on a 4 axle trailer that time may be cut in half.

@Paul Even though both the # 2028 and # 50-85-313 have the same 5Ah battery, the Shur-Set III is built with better wiring, a stronger relay, and higher-capacity parts to handle four axles. The # 50-85-313, on the other hand, is limited by its internal components and rated for three axles. How many axles does the trailer have that you are looking of a breakaway battery for?

@KateF 4 axles = 8 magnets (12x2 brakes)

@Paul So technically the # 2028 could handle 4 axles but would only brake for the full 15 minutes if you had smaller brakes, like 7" or 10" if they were drawing just the 3.0A and not the 3.2A. With 12" brakes and the draw being 3.2 - 3.5A if it was pulling the 3.5A it would last for 11 minutes. I reached out to Brightway to see if they have something like the Brightway Trailer Breakaway Kit w/ Charger, LED Tester, and 10 Ah Battery - Top Load # 3802311 that will work on 4 axles, I will let you know what I find out. Is this a custom built trailer? If not, what kind of breakaway did the trailer come with?
