The Curt Spectrum Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional - Dash Mount # C51170 will only apply the brakes to your trailer when you press and hold the knob to engage the manual override, or apply the brakes to your tow vehicle. As long as you are not applying the brakes you will have no issues backing up.
