Can these replacement cleats be mounted directly to the truck roof rather than being used with the trac system?

I spoke with Thule to confirm. While it is entirely possible for the Replacement Tie-Down Cleat for TracRac Ladder Racks, part # TA01-27046, to be mounted directly to your truck roof, this is not recommended. As this is not the cleat's intended purpose, there are no specs concerning how much weight it can handle or how well it holds up when mounted directly to a vehicle.

Instead, I recommend going with an anchor point that is intended for this use. One option is the Erickson Hide-A-Hook, part # EM09094. This is rated for 1200 pounds and gives you a low-profile hook point.

Or, if the appeal of the cleat was the ring, you can go with the Buyers Products 1/2 " Cast Aluminum Chain Loop, part # 337B2402AL. This is rated for 800 pounds and features an opening width of 2-1/8" and a depth of 1-3/4".
