Question:

Hello, I am looking for a solution that will allow me to have a Tonneau cover over my bed and have a rack that will allow me to add kayak carrier, ski carrier, etc. In looking at Item # Y01-140B and the review submitted by Austin on 9/23/2019, this does seem doable however is there a particular cover I would need folding hard shell cover for example? Also, with Item # Y01-140B, is it possible to leave the legs and remove the bars when not in use I was initially looking at Retrax however the cannister would take up too much space in my 57inch bed. I hope this makes sense. Thanks

I'll start out by saying that, yes, the Retrax PRO XR # RTT-80231 does have a bit of a larger canister that is prohibitive on a short bed truck like your 2017 Ram 1500. With that said, we do have a solution for you to use the Rhino-Rack # Y01-140B with a tonneau on your 2017 Ram 1500. I recommend using the BAK Revolver X2 Hard Tonneau Cover - Roll Up - Aluminum and Vinyl # BAK39207, which will mount inside the bed rails and leave them free for you to mount the tracks of the Rhino Rack system.

You will need to remove the legs and bars in order to allow you to roll up the tonneau, but it's going to be the most cost effective and least impact on your truck bed storage space; I prefer going this route over a hard folding cover since that would require drilling into the cover and it just creates potential for leaking water into the truck bed.

If you wanted to go the hard folding route, the BAKFlip MX4 Hard Tonneau Cover - Folding - Aluminum - Matte Finish # BAK48207 would be my recommendation. You'll want to install the tracks on the folding cover itself, but the tracks can be trimmed into pieces that would make this possible.
