Receiver and Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation for 1968 Ford F-250

Updated 10/03/2020 | Published 10/01/2020

Question:

I have a 1968 Ford F250. With a Heavy duty bumper that attaches to the Frame in multiple spots.I have a ball hitch on the bumper. I have a 20 foot 1950 Airstream trailer that is 3500 lbs. I would like to use a weight distribution bar but I cannot find anything that would work for a bumper hitch. I am wondering if I should attach a step bumper reciever or if there is anyway to make my bumper work. It is a heavy duty bumper and I would love to use it but I am also trying to get better control of the trailer and I may need to change it up. Does this question make sense.

In order to use a weight distribution system you'll need to install a receiver hitch mounted directly to the frame of the vehicle. We don't offer any weight distribution systems that would allow you to utilize a bumper mounted trailer ball.

If your heavy duty bumper is a standard or a step bumper, I'd recommend the Draw-Tite # 41947 which has a 1600 lb towing/16000 lb capacity if used with weight distribution. If you have a deep drop bumper, which is also called a cowboy bumper, use # BWHDRH25198 which also has a 1600 lb towing/16000 lb with weight distribution rating.

Because travel trailers like your Airstream are very susceptible to trailer sway caused by crosswinds and turbulence from passing or oncoming traffic, I'd highly recommend using a weight distribution system with a integrated sway control component. I'd recommend the Fastway # FA92-00-0600, which can handle trailer tongue weights ranging from 250-600 lbs, which would be perfect for a 3500 lb Airstream. The # A-90 trailer ball is sold separately. You'll need a 1-7/8 inch thin wall socket to install the ball, if you don't have one, we offer one as part # EQ70-00-4800.

I'll link to a demonstration video for the weight distribution system I mentioned. My friend Randy will show you how the system works.
