Replacement Lift Strut for Yakima Load Ranger 16 Cargo Box

Question:
Im looking to replace the gas strut that I have right now. Can I use a mechanical strut? If so what kind? I checked the Yakima website and the part number is 8007131 which I could not find anywhere.

According to Yakima, the Load Ranger 16 is obsolete and unfortunately they no longer offer replacement parts. It's possible that the # 8880683 you'd looked at could be made to work, but Yakima didn't have any advice to offer regarding how to make that possible.
If you decide to replace your existing cargo box, I'd recommend the Yakima SkyBox 16, part # Y07335. The SkyBox has some excellent features, but the nicest would be its ability to open from either the driver or passenger side of the vehicle.
