Distance Between the Trailer Ball and the Sway Control Ball on the Trailer

Updated 09/12/2024 | Published 03/03/2009

Question:

I am replacing an old sway control. What does the distance between the ball on the trailer and the ball on the hitch need to be? Thanks

The center of the ball on the plate that mounts on the trailer should be 24 inches from the center of the trailer coupler (where the center of the hitch ball would be when towing). The first two diagrams on the top of page 2 in the instructions (see link) shows the mounting dimensions.

Because of the battery and propane tank positions, the distance from the tongue attachment of the sway bar to the ball is going to have to be 26 inches. Will that still work?

@Doug Nope, the # 83660 can't be 24 inches, it simply doesn't have the physical length needed. There is only a single thing you can do which is to use a weight distribution hitch that can meet that 26 inch length, the Reese Pro Round Bar Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # RE34FR. This is the only possible way to get sway control outside of an electronic unit like the Tuson Trailer Sway Control System # 335TSC-1000. However, you should definitely not buy this as it's way too expensive and isn't nearly as good as a standard weight distribution hitch, I'm just supposed to give you every possible option so you have all the information.
