Troubleshooting Brake and Turn Signal on Trailer Not Working

Updated 06/30/2020 | Published 06/27/2020

Question:

I have a 2003 1500 Silverado with the factory towing package. Every light on my trailer is working with the exception of the right brake/turn signal light. The regular running tail light is working on that side, but not the turn/brake. Ive checked the fuses inside the cab and none are blown. What could the problem be?

Even though the fuses are good, I do recommend that you start by checking the pin in the 3 o'clock position (when looking at the front) on your 2003 Chevy Silverado's 7 way connector. I would start just by making sure that the pin is free of dirt, debris or corrosion and clean it off as needed. Then, you'll need a circuit tester like the # PTW2993 in order to verify that pin is receiving power when the turn signal and brakes are engaged. If there is not power, the issue is going to be on the truck and you'll want to check behind the 7 way connector to make sure that none of the wires have become damaged.

If there is power on the truck's 7 way connector, you'll want to start checking the wiring on the trailer going back to the tail light for any damage (if you've got bonded wire on your trailer's 7 way you may want to start directly at the right tail light). You'll need to replace any damaged wiring as needed. If your trailer lights are grounded by the hardware and not a ground wire (it will be a 1 wire light as opposed to 2), you'll want to make sure the light is firmly connected to a paint and rust free spot on the trailer.

If those steps don't address the issue, let me know and I can continue troubleshooting this situation with you.
