How To Replace 4-Way Trailer Connector with 5 Wires with One That Has 4 Wires

Updated 05/26/2020 | Published 05/20/2020

Question:

I noticed today that one of the pins on my utility trailer side plug had broken off in the vehicle plug. I had a new 4 pin connector in the garage however realized when installing that it has 4 wires and my trailer has 5 wires. I connected green to green, yellow to yellow, white to white and then put the two browns on the plug brown wire. All lights work with the exception of the right side tail light and turn signal. Im not sure why this doesnt work and am I dealing with a separate issue. I should mention the trailer is only a year old and wiring was fine up until the pin broke. Thanks for any help you can offer.

In order to replace a trailer side 4-way connector that has five wires like the 20 Ft 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness part # A20WB with a trailer side 4-way connector that has four slots/wires like the Quick Fix 4 Pole Flat Trailer End part # HMC20031 you'd simply need to combine the two brown wires as they are running lights for each side of the trailer.

In regards to the trailer lighting issue, you likely have some sort of short on the green wire or a loose connection.
